Snow is almost to the bottom of the top step and the BBQ is all but covered...mind you, this area is sheltered by trees. Sure am glad we surrounded the deck with that plastic sheeting!

This design was adapted from shield designs used by the Apache, who were powerful protectors of their property and familes. Shields were used both for protection in battle and for use in ceremonial life. The shields were made from the heaviest buffalo hides and were used by the Native Americans of the Plains as well as the Southwest, though the shield designs varied from tribe to tribe. Some shields, for example, were decorated with feathers, others were not. Designs on the shields were important, for the design was believed to be a powerful deterrent to the enemy; in some tribes, a cover was kept over the shield until just before it was used in battle, so that the strength of the design would not be weakened before it was actually needed to help defeat the enemy.

Another representation of a Thunderbird from the perspective of the Pima Indian. The Pima, located in southern Arizona, are known for their skills in pottery and basketweaving,and this Thunderbird was a figure used to adorn baskets, pots, and other clothing, jewelry, and ceremonial utilitarian items.

The rain clouds as dipicted here are common American Indian symbols, and the raindancer is only one of the many figures of the various dances of the Indian culture. The rain dance was of major importance to the culture and ceremonies of the Southwest Indians of Arizona and New Mexico. This design shows the Zuni characteristic of mosaic inlay using different colors of stones and coral pieces, which is particularly evident in their world-reknowned jewelry.

Mother Earth and Father Sky are only 2 of the many figures used in ceremonial life; in sandpaintings, dance, stories, and myth. These and other figures were important deities, a way for th people to show their high regards for the powers of he earth and sky because it was the fertile soil, rain, and sun that made possible the crops for food to sustain their families and their lives. Note that these figures, like the Yeibichai figures, are also wearing masks, for noone is allowed to see the faces of such important deities as Mother Earth and Father Sky. Inside the "belly" of the Mother Earth figure is portrayed the corn plant, the fod staple of the Southwest Indian people, nd of course inside the figure of Father Sky are symbols for the sun, moon, and stars. The Rainbow Guardian surrounds the pair on the North, West, and South.

Adapted from sandpainting designs displayed on wall hangings and rugs by the Navajo. Figures shown are Male Yeibichai: Navajo supernatural beings, which are represented by masked dancers. Square facemasks indicate they are female. Male Yei wear round facemasks. Original designs were made crushed stones and sand from the earth. Therefore, the colors of sandpaintings were soft browns, rose tones, black from charcoal, with some red, yellow and white sands, and plant pollens. The sandpaintings were made for special curing orreligious purposes and were always destroyed by sundown of the same day they were created and used. Sand pictures were made on the ground in a pre-determined design for specific ceremonies. Contemporary sandpainting designs, sold to the public, are not used for religious or curative ceremonies. They are purposely designed with discrepancies from the original designs; this shows reverence for the spiritual powers of the original designs. Figures of the sandpaintings are all said to "enter" from the top (or East) of the painting, which leaves the sides and bottom unprotected; thus the Rainbow Guardian figure embraces the three unprotected sides of the painting and provides the needed protection to the rest of the figures.

Two new additions from the 6 week trip that Mr Ken made to California forhis family reunion. This is the second one which was given to him by his brother-in-law. A 1972 - 17' Glasspar open-hull boat. Needs some work, but will make a great fishing boat on the rivers and dams here in Idaho.

Turquoise and silver feathers are the focus on this newly designed necklace. Different from the norm, the antique white pearl bugles are verticle rather than horizontal. Adorned the turquoise glass seed beads, sterling spacer beads, and a webbed turquoise focal stone surrounded in a web of tiny (15/0) silver-lined hex-cut beads. It has a hook clasp and removable chain in the back so it can be lengthened or shortened. It measures 14" long up to the clasp. The clasp and chain add another 4" to the length.
