The completed painting with mallards, a mouse, 3 kinds of butterflies, a dragonfly & a frog. It took me 6 months to do, but I'm pleased with the way it turned out.

The mom & baby ducks are nearly done and I'm laying in the main colors on the drake. Still sharpening up various things in the background.

Starting the ducks themselves. The hen is going to be the most complicated, so I'd like to concentrate on that one first. The babies should be the most fun, though their markings are variable.

The flowers have been added to the pickerelweeds, which were fun to do. How often do I get to use purple? I also was detailing the tree root on the far left and putting more shading on the willow leaves.

Willow branches nearly done. Have put more colors on water, some of which covered part of the tree root. I'll redo it.

The base color, green-gold, has been put on the water. It looks too yellow, but will get greener when I add more layers.

Ducks themselves have been put on tracing paper, arranged on painting & transferred to the canvas.

Working on the iris stems & have done a lot on the tree trunk.

The yellow flag irises have their petals now. the tree trunk is done too, though the bark is a bit van Gogh-y, more swirly than willows usually are. It resembles a story book tree, which I like.

The cattail leaves have been added on the streambank, but I'm not sure if that color is right for them. The marked off section is a tree trunk.

The start of the painting, a dark green background at the top.
